Countdown to the Conference
Located just 90 minutes from Dublin and Galway, Athlone is the largest urban centre in the region and is home to a highly regarded Institute of Technology and leading international tech and pharma businesses.
At the heart of Ireland and the waterways, Athlone sits astride the River Shannon. Its imposing castle and church illustrating Ireland’s past as a nation actively defended by Celtic & Norman kings and rendered Christian by sailing monks.
Here, the River Shannon is a hive of activity, with three charter boat companies based nearby and numerous day-boat and tour boats based around the town. The Navigation lock in the centre of the town is in constant use by pleasure craft of all sizes. The Royal Canal and Grand Canal enter the river a few miles north and south of Athlone respectively, connecting the final leg of the Green and Silver route* reopened in 2010 when the restoration of the Royal Canal was completed.
Home to Ireland’s oldest pub and some of our newest hotels, Athlone is the centre of Ireland’s waterways and an ideal location to bring together leading professionals, academics, students and enthusiasts to learn, share and explore the opportunities the waterways offer.
